Summer 2009
Tips by JG
The hot summer months are here and it is time to enjoy the benefits of the outdoors. Most of us have worked hard this spring getting our outdoor living spaces prepared and improved. But just because it is summer time doesn't mean that we can just sit there with a cold drink in our hands and expect our yards to maintain themselves !
There are two main concerns this time of year that we are all too familiar with.......WEEDS and BUGS ! The summer weeds are in their most active growing phase right now. And since most weeds in the St. Louis area are annual plants, they grow and produce seeds like crazy because it is the only chance they have to reproduce. Bed weeds and crack/crevase weeds can be controlled chemically or by good old fashioned hand pulling. Glyphosate products such as Round Up® work well for areas where there is no risk of harming desireable plants. If there is a weed problem in the turf, selective herbicides are required and I recommend hiring a licensed professional to handle this problem. Insects can also cause havoc in the landscape if not controlled properly. Three of the most common ones to look for this time of year are Japanese beetles, spider mites, and bagworms. If you spot any of these pests on your ornamental plants, you should again consult with a professional before using chemicals or hire a licensed applicator to address the issue. Lawn grubs are also beginning their summer feast. Apply a grub control fertilizer at the specified rate to limit the damage. Remember, when using any chemicals............ALWAYS READ THE LABELS !
One more thing that I suggest for bed maintenance this time of year is mulch cultivation. This is a process where the mulch is disturbed and loosened to prevent compaction and keeps the mulch looking fresh.
So enjoy your summer and don't forget that cold drink when you are finished with all your hard work. You deserve it !!
